Howard Smith Wharves Redevelopment Community Engagement

Three Plus was engaged by Howard Smith Wharves Nominees (HSW Nominees) on the planning and implementation of a community and stakeholder engagement program as part of its development application process for its Howard Smith Wharves (HSW) project.

Task

The purpose of the community engagement program was to engage stakeholders in informed discussion about what the proposed project may mean to the local area and the surrounding region. This required information about the project design and potential impacts, and the establishment of a number of opportunities and avenues for stakeholders to participate in consultation.

This community engagement strategy clearly identified a program of activity that communicated the benefits of the project to the wider Brisbane City such as the activation of a disused site, activation of the river, preservation and enhancement of heritage and public open space, and introduction of a high quality ‘Arts Series’ boutique hotel.

Response

Three Plus helped deliver an innovative and engaging communications strategy resulting in effective management of the consultation process. The avenues provided and tools implemented by Three Plus are outlined below:

  • A Community Information Session was conducted to present project information to the community and answer questions
  • Community and stakeholder comments were managed by a Three Plus consultant who captured and responded to all views after key responses were approved by HSW Nominees
  • Key stakeholder project briefings were regularly conducted with elected representatives, industry representatives, local businesses and other stakeholders
  • Project information was provided early and regularly to all elected representatives in the project area at all levels of government
  • Three Plus designed, developed content and distributed a newsletter with information on the project and the Community Information Session
  • Media management including drafting and distributing media releases to local media and managing media enquiries
  • Issues management through an Issues and Risk Management Plan which identified issues, stakeholders and risk management strategies.

Achievements

Three Plus helped deliver an innovative and engaging communications strategy resulting in effective management of the consultation process, including:

  • development of all print and online marketing collateral for community engagement
  • successful management of the Community Information Session in 2015
  • widespread media coverage about the development
